Project Info:

The Pune Smart City project is intended at upgrading the neighbourhood public spaces and the standard of living through a wide spread use of sustainable energy using various installations. Placemaking is one such project planned for an enhanced community living experience. The challenge was designing a versatile open space on the principles of cost efficiency, enhancing natural site conditions, high social impact, sustainability and zero power. Innovative and experimental ways had to be worked out, tired and tested before introducing it for public use. Techniques to harness the renewable sources of energy for regular use within these spaces have been worked out efficiently. Storm water harvesting to replenish the ground water table is installed to balance the natural resources. To make the space self reliant in terms of electrical use, a unique ‘Solar Tree’ and solar roof seatings are designed to maximise the conversion of solar energy into electricity for illumination and charging stations. These elements and principles are developed in great detail for the spaces to be used in three particular social scenarios. 1. E learning and skill development- Semi open and open spaces powered by renewable energy systems to promote spaces for workshops and group activities. The target user group is the youth, attracting the tech savvy crowd as a more active way of spacial use. 2. Leisure and meditation- Spaces used for fitness and mental health purpose so as to actively involve in the natural elements around. Workout sessions and health related group activities carried out for a general wellness awareness. 3. Art and ecology- Promotion of spaces that help interact with nature on a personal level and make use of natural surroundings to push art appreciation. This space is ideated for artists and art admirers to socialise within the realms of nature and sustainability while creating a strong social dialogue.
